Colombia is becoming the new global leading in the medical cannabis business, in 2015 the government sign a decree legalizing and regulating the use of medical cannabis, this decree is the No. 2467 from december of 2015 exclusively for the use of cannabis in medical and scientific purposes.
Nowadays the government of Colombia have approved more than 240 licences to companies for producing medicinal cannabis. There are four types of licences given by the Colombian Ministry of Justice and the Minister of Health and Social Protection of Colombia, one of them is the license of use of seeds for crops, the other one is for cultivate non psychoactive cannabis, the third one is for cultivate psychoactive cannabis and the last one is the license for fabrication of derivatives of cannabis, this is the only licence that you request to the Ministerio de Salud y Protección Social.
In Colombia you can get this 4 types of licenses, depending on the kind of business you want to make. You can request this authorizations to manufacture, export, research, marketing and distribution of phychoactive cannabis derivatives for medical and scientific purposes, these licenses have a duration from one to five years, depending on the time you need them and in some cases it can be less if you are a foreigner and your visa expire date is less than 5 years.
License for the Manufacture of Cannabis Derivatives: this license allows you to produce products derived from cannabis for domestic use, for exportation and for scientific research domestically. You can check all the requirements and prices here.
License for the use of Cannabis Seeds: this license allows you to sell and distribute cannabis seeds and use them for scientific purposes. The requirements you can check them here, and the prices here.
License for the Cultivation of Psychoactive Cannabis: this license allows you to produce cannabis as a crop, to produce cannabis for the manufacture of cannabis derivatives (for this you also need the License for the Manufacture of Cannabis Derivatives or to prove that the application for this license is in process), to produce cannabis for scientific purposes, to store cannabis and for its final disposal. License for Non-Psychoactive Cannabis Cultivation: this license allows you to produce cannabis grain and seeds for planting, for manufacturing derivatives, for industrial purposes, for scientific purposes, for storage and for final disposal. The requirements you can check them here.
Within these four licenses, you can apply for each of the activities individually. Depending on your needs, you may apply for just one activity, multiple activities or all of them. For instance, if you are only interested in distributing cannabis seeds, you can apply for the distribution part of the License for the use of Cannabis Seeds rather than the whole license.
When you apply for a Cannabis License it may take approximately 30 days providing all the information and forms to the entity. Once the processing authorization is granted, the companies can receive their cultivation license and start their business. Some of the companies that already have the authorization to process cannabis are: Cannalivio, Pideka, Ecomedics, Econnabis, Cannavida and Pharmacielo. In this case, the licenses were granted under Decree 2467, 2015, repealed to give way to the legislation in the Ley Galán.
